You may have thought about hiring a coach to help you start a sport or help you progress in a sport. Whether it be to provide you with a training plan, analyze your technique or simply to change up your current training routine. Hiring a coach can be extremely beneficial to your progress as an athlete and can be a game changer in helping you achieve your goals. Here are a few reasons why having a coach is in your best interest:

1) Knowledge & Expertise in Sport

If you are new to a sport one of the main reasons to hire a coach is to help properly develop your sport specific skills. A coach will help you learn the basic techniques required for the sport. This will ensure good habits are developed from the beginning. For the more experienced athlete a coach will help identify & correct any bad habits and help you get those marginal gains that make the difference between first and second place. Proper form is essential to generate movement efficiency and to prevent injuries. A coach will have the knowledge to provide you with this feedback so that you can get the most out of your training. This will help new athletes avoid common mistakes made when starting training and will help the more experienced athlete find new improvements that will further accelerate their development in the sport.

2) Objective View and Structured Training

Many times as athletes we get tunnel vision when creating our own workouts sometimes losing sight of the bigger training picture or we don't have a plan for our training. A coach has an objective view of your training, they only have your best interest in mind. They make a plan to help get you to your goals, this creates structure for your training which will help you thrive. Coaches aren’t subjected to the emotional swing that athletes get while training. Athletes will have good and bad days, a coach will help keep you on track by having an objective view and help remind you of the bigger picture when you feel things aren’t going the way they should.

3) Injury Prevention and Management

Injuries are an athletes worst nightmare. A coach will help adapt your training to work around your injury and help bring you back to a healthy training routine. Often times after injuries an athlete will want to ramp up too quickly and immediately go back to pre injury training load. A coach will help ease you back in and manage expectations as you return to normal training. Far too often an athlete will return too quickly and find themselves re-injured. A coach will help you avoid re-injury and will help get you back to your normal training load.

4) Accountability

Do you write down your goals? Having a coach provides accountability towards achieving your goals and workouts. A coach will help you define your goals, create a plan to help you achieve them and remind you of these goals if you start losing sight of them. This provides accountability towards achieving your goals. Having a coach will make sure you stay on track towards the intentions you had initially set. A coach will monitor your progress regularly making sure you are doing your workouts and following the plan. The onus is on the athlete to do the work but a coach will help keep you accountable to ensure that you’re doing the work. This helps increase workout completion and will help athletes accomplish their goals faster than if left on their own.

5) Time and Stress Saving

Have you woken up and thought “How far should I run today?” or “Should I swim, bike or run today?”. A coach makes a plan for you so you don’t have to stress about the details of your training schedule freeing this mental energy so it can be applied to other parts of your busy day. This will help you save time and you will be able to accomplish more tasks outside of training while allowing you to focus all your energy on nailing your workout.
